Key Issues Training for Teachers in June or July 2016; Scholarship Applications due by 3/30/16

The Mojave Environmental Education Consortium is proud to announce an exciting opportunity for Grade K-12 teachers to earn a full scholarship to attend The Key Issues Institute, a one-of-a-kind professional development workshop in Keystone, Colorado which integrates STEM, environmental education and experiential techniques this summer!

This once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunity is made possible by the Antelope Valley Air Quality Management District, Boeing, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics-Palmdale, the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and MEEC.  In 2016, three Antelope Valley teachers and two teachers from the San Bernardino County High Desert or Riverside County’s Blythe region will be chosen to partake in the Keystone Science School’s interdisciplinary five-day STEM workshop, which equips educators with the skills and confidence to explore local and global environmental issues with their students. Best of all, Key Issues is aligned to national education standards, including Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards!

Using Colorado’s spectacular ecosystems as its setting, Key Issues combines classroom time with outdoor exploration of the natural environment.  Lessons include lab testing, outdoor water testing and indoor lecture periods. In addition to enjoying professional networking opportunities with teachers from across the country, each participant receives a customized Lab-Aids kit to take back to his/her classroom.  Airfare, training, lodging and meals are included as part of the scholarship recipient’s award and participants may select to attend one of two sessions held between June 21 and July 24, 2016.

Range and Natural Resources Camp in June 2016; Scholarships Available

The 32nd Annual Range and Natural Resources Camp will be taking place June 19-24, 2016 at the beautiful Elkus Youth Ranch in Half Moon Bay, California. The camp offers students between the ages of 15-18 the opportunity to work with peers from throughout the state and is designed to offer an appreciation of the extent, importance and value of California’s rangelands and natural resources. Range Camp fosters an appreciation for several fields of applied science and management through interaction with university faculty and experienced professionals in classroom and field activities.

Students will address the importance of such topics as plant identification, livestock production, wildlife management, forestry, fire ecology, geology, soils, water resources, rangeland ecosystems, technologies used in natural resource science and management.

At the end of the week, students will be evaluated on their understanding of the materials, with the top two scoring campers being awarded an all-expense-paid trip to represent California and the Pacific Islands at The Society for Range Management’s High School Youth Forum (HSYF) held in conjunction with its national science meeting in St. George, Utah, from January 29-February 2, 2016. The third highest scoring camper will be invited to attend as well, but will need to find other means of paying for the trip. (Delegates must still be in high school through Feb 2017.)

MEEC is offering four student scholarships that will be awarded to attend Range Camp this summer. Scholarships include tuition ($450) and roundtrip airfare up to $350 per person. To apply, students must be enrolled in a school located within the MEEC boundaries of San Bernardino County’s High Desert Region, the Antelope Valley or Riverside County’s Blythe Region and be age 15-18 by the start date of camp. The deadline for application submission to MEEC is April 21, 2016 at 5:00 PM.

Chevron/USC Viterbi School of Engineering Summer Camp Applications Due by 4/10/15

Chevron will be selecting 20 outstanding high school students (rising juniors and rising seniors are eligible to apply) from across the U.S. to attend the Chevron sponsored summer educational camp, "Frontiers of Energy Resources", hosted at the University of Southern California July 5 - 10, 2015.

 

The Frontiers of Energy Resources Summer Camp offers a preparatory, interactive training program focusing on various energy resources including fossil fuels, solar, biofuels, nuclear energy, and information technologies for energy efficient operations. This unique program is designed to introduce exceptional high school juniors and as many as 5 high school science or math teachers to the opportunities and career possibilities available in the global energy resources industry.

 

Students must submit a sealed teacher recommendation, upload an unofficial transcript, and compose a statement of purpose with their application. Teachers are required to compose a statement of purpose with their application. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, April 10, 2015.

AV Tech Trek Camper Welcome Home Gathering

Boeing Sponsors Five Military Dependent Students to Attend Tiger Woods STEM Camp

The Boeing High Desert Employees Community Fund has provided a generous donation to sponsor five middle school aged children of active-duty military families to attend the week-long Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim.  During the camp, students will have the opportunity to study STEM subjects such as video game design, robotics, kitchen chemistry, zoology, velocity racers, as well as golf and a visit to Disneyland, where they will learn how STEM applies to park operations.  Boeing High Desert Employees Community Fund Sponsors Military Kids in STEM .

AV Summer Gateway Academy Registration Available Until 5/23/14



The AVUHSD will offer two sessions of the PLTW (c) Summer Gateway Academy in 2014.  Designed to introduce incoming 7th and 8th graders to STEM principles related to engineering and robotics, the free week-long camp sessions will take place 23-27 June 2014 at SOAR Prep Academy in Quartz Hill, and 21-25 July 2014 at Knight High School in Palmdale.  Each session will accept approximately 35 students on a first-come, first-served basis; students must have their own daily transportation and lunch.  For further information and to apply, please visit the red tab at Summer Gateway Academy - Middle School Registration 2014.  Registration will be open until 23 May 2014 or until filled (classes may waitlist).

California State Summer School for Math and Science Applications Due 2/21/14

COSMOS is a four-week residential program for talented and motivated students who are completing grades 8-12. Students who love math and science have a chance to spend four weeks at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz or UC San Diego this summer. They will learn about astronomy, biomedical sciences, computer games, engineering, robotics and more.

 

Students will work side-by-side with outstanding UC researchers and faculty, exploring advanced topics that extend beyond the typical high school curriculum. COSMOS courses are hands-on and lab-intensive, emphasizing current research underway at the University of California campuses.

National Youth Science Camp Applications Due by 3/1/14

Applications from graduating seniors for the National Youth Science Camp are due by 1 March 2014.  This prestigious opportunity allows two seniors from each state to attend the residential science program at no cost (including registration, room, board, and transportation expenses being paid for successful applicants), which will be held this year near Bartow, WV, in the Monongahela National Forest from 27 June to 20 July 2014.  Noted scientists will present lectures and hands-on activities as well as interact with student delegates.

Applicants must demonstrate superior academic proficiency in math and science, leadership skills and social maturity as evidenced by participation in community events, involvement in extra-curricular as well as academic events, be eligible for graduation between 7/1/13 and 6/30/14, and intend to pursue a STEM major in post-secondary education.  Some citizenship requirements apply.

Millionaire Mind Kids STEM Camps in Victorville - Applications Due 6/10/13

Millionaire Mind Kids in Victorville is accepting applications for all of its summer camps (nominal fees charged based on income level). MMK Aerospace Career Training (Aviation) (high School, ages 14—18): This 10-day camp will accept 25 students The Millionaire Mind Kids’ ACT Academy is a 10 -day field-trip and project-based camp for students who have a general interest in exploring the many different careers in the field of aviation. Students will research and visit local SCLA Businesses. MMK is currently pursing relationships for flight opportunities for students. This camp will be held June 17 through June 27.

MMK Robotics & STEAM Camps (ages 9—13) and (ages 14-18) these five-day camps will accept 50 students. Students will explore the many applications of robotic technology using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math applications. At the end of this camp 20 students will be given an opportunity to join robotic clubs that will compete in 2012-2013 US First Tech Competitions. Other STEAM Activities will be offered to students who may not choose to participate in Robotics. This camp will be held July 8-12 and July 15—19.

MMK Financial Literacy Camp (ages 12—18) this five day camp will accept 50 students. This self-empowerment program will allow students to explore money management and credit responsibility concepts. Student will use life skills to set and track goals. This camp is scheduled for July 22—July 26. The dates will be determined by the number of enrollees.

UCLA Summer Tech Camp Applications Due 3/22/13

UCLA's Engineering Science Corps Outreach Program is offering a four-week Summer Tech Camp for  sophomore or junior students in high school who have at least a 2.5 unweighted GPA, and are interested in engineering and applying their math and science skills in projects at the Creativity Center.  The cost for the camp is $3,000, however, limited scholarships are available from the Henry Samueli School of Engineering & Applied Science.  Interested students must complete the application materials, and a tuition assistance form if interested, and submit them by no later than 22 March 2013.  For more information, visit https://esc.seas.ucla.edu/mod/resource/view.php?id=2296 .

"Tech Trekkers Explain Tech Trek" Event 11/10/12 at AVC

AVUHSD To Host Two 2012 Summer Gateway Academy Sessions

The Antelope Valley Union High School District will host SME/PLTW (c) Summer Gateway Academy sessions for middle schoolers for the fourth consecutive year.  One week-long day camp focusing on pre-engineering and robotics will be held from 18-22 June 2012 at Lancaster High School from 7:30am to 1:00pm, and a second with pre-engineering and "green" projects will be held from 9-13 July 2012 at Knight High School in Palmdale.  There is no cost to attend, however, students must have their own transportation to and from the site and provide their own lunch.

Lancaster School District 2012 Summer of Innovation Day Camp Applications Due 6/11/12

Lancaster Summer of Innovation Program Completed

One hundred twelve middle school students participated in a week-long Summer of Innovation STEM camp held by the Lancaster School District.  The week culminated on Friday, 12 August 2011, with a series of model rocket launches by students, cheered on by parents and siblings.

Satellite classes from the nearby Columbia Memorial Space Center were highlights of the "Summer 101" program sponsored by Downey Adult School over the last few weeks.  "Rocks to Rockets" and "Engineeering and Robotics" classes were quite popular "as they introduced advanced science and math concepts in a real-world setting. Silicon Valley Op-Ed Piece Promotes "Stepping Up to Science" Intervention

In an opinion piece in the San Jose Mercury News, Muhammed Chaudhry, CEO of the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, and Don Macleod, CEO of National Semiconductor, decry the fall of science education in the 50 years since President Kennedy challenged the US to get to the moon and back within a decade.  The writers cite lagging budgets and No Child Left Behind mandates for the losses.  The SVEF and National Semiconductor paired up locally to host a free summer science intervention program to bridge the gap for graduating middle schoolers called "Stepping Up to Science."  Two hundred forty low-scoring students from the East Side Union High School District attended the first session this summer, focusing on biology and lab; the donation from National Semiconductor to cover the program also plans to provide 120 teachers with professional development over the next three years.  http://www.mercurynews.com/opinion/ci_18554795?nclick_check=1

 Thirty-two enthusiastic, local Antelope Valley middle school students participated in the third annual Summer Gateway Academy at Knight High School 11-15 July.  Among the activities they completed included bottle rockets, "Eggstronauts," robotics, bridge-building, and solar cars.  Volunteers from Lockheed Martin and NASA made presentations and assisted students with projects.  Instructor Bill Lewis hosted an open house with astronomy and rocket launching on Thursday evening, and there was a "culmination" ceremony on Friday afternoon, both of which were attended by parents. 

Local Summer of Innovation Activities Underway

NASA's Summer of Innovation activities targeting middle school students' involvement in STEM education have been underway in the local area.  Russ Billings, NASA Dryden's pre-college programs manager at the AERO Institute in Palmdale, was quoted in the Bakersfield Californian after model rockets were flown at CSUB to culminate 200 students' experiences in the second annual eight-day summer program:  "There are endless problems to be solved.  These kids will be the ones to work on those problems in a few years."  http://www.bakersfield.com/news/local/x2131987846/Student-made-rockets-take-to-the-sky-in-NASA-program  Similar launches took place at Westmorland Union Elementary School in the Imperial Valley through its MESA program.  Twenty-four students took part in the launch, which was part of a two-week program involving 225 students, many of whom are visiting NASA Dryden as a culminating event.  http://www.ivpressonline.com/news/ivp-news-westmorland-mesa-students-have-fun-with-nasa-rockets-20110624,0,362752.story

Joe Walker Middle School in Quartz Hill has also hosted week-long robotics and rocketry workshops during the month of June, including over 100 students.  Eastside, Lancaster, and Palmdale School Districts have also provided events for their students.  Each of the programs will continue with extended activities for the students during the upcoming school year.
