Key Issues Training for Teachers in June or July 2016; Scholarship Applications due by 3/30/16

The Mojave Environmental Education Consortium is proud to announce an exciting opportunity for Grade K-12 teachers to earn a full scholarship to attend The Key Issues Institute, a one-of-a-kind professional development workshop in Keystone, Colorado which integrates STEM, environmental education and experiential techniques this summer!

This once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunity is made possible by the Antelope Valley Air Quality Management District, Boeing, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics-Palmdale, the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and MEEC.  In 2016, three Antelope Valley teachers and two teachers from the San Bernardino County High Desert or Riverside County’s Blythe region will be chosen to partake in the Keystone Science School’s interdisciplinary five-day STEM workshop, which equips educators with the skills and confidence to explore local and global environmental issues with their students. Best of all, Key Issues is aligned to national education standards, including Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards!

Using Colorado’s spectacular ecosystems as its setting, Key Issues combines classroom time with outdoor exploration of the natural environment.  Lessons include lab testing, outdoor water testing and indoor lecture periods. In addition to enjoying professional networking opportunities with teachers from across the country, each participant receives a customized Lab-Aids kit to take back to his/her classroom.  Airfare, training, lodging and meals are included as part of the scholarship recipient’s award and participants may select to attend one of two sessions held between June 21 and July 24, 2016.

Lancaster MPAF STEAM Scholarship Essays Due 10/1/15

The Lancaster Museum and Public Art Foundation is accepting essay submissions for a new STEAM scholarship.  Open to high school juniors and seniors throughout the Antelope Valley, the 500-650 word essays will address the topic: "How art and technology will impact the future of the Antelope Valley."  Submissions, due by October 1, 2015,  will be judged on their demonstration of skills in writing, critical thinking and creativity.  The winner will receive a $500 scholarship and a tour of ABC 7 television studio.  The student and his/her family will be honored at the October 17, 2o15 MOAH gala.

Calling all graduating high school seniors! $2000 Scholarship Opportunity!

The Mojave Environmental Education Consortium is pleased to announce its 2014/2015 Environmental/Science Scholarship Program. MEEC will be awarding five $2000 scholarships to qualifying applicants for the 2014/2015 academic year. Graduating high school seniors attending high school within MEEC’s boundaries are encouraged to apply.

MEEC’s boundaries consist of the High Desert portion of San BernardinoCounty, the Palo Verde Valley of Riverside County and the High Desert region of North Los Angeles County, including the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale.

Eligible students must declare a major in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or other closely related Science or Engineering field.

Applicants are required to provide the following:
1. A completed application form (available at MEEC Environmental/Engineering Scholarship 2015 )
2. Transcripts and SAT/ACT scores (unofficial copies accepted)
3. 500 word personal essay on – “My Career Goals and Why I would like a Career in the Environment, Science, or Engineering field ”

Range and Natural Resources Camp Scholarship Applications Due By 4/24/15

The 31st Annual Range and Natural Resources Camp will be taking place June 21-26, 2015 at the beautiful Elkus Youth Ranch in Half Moon Bay, California. The camp offers students between the ages of 15-18 the opportunity to work with peers from throughout the state and is designed to offer an appreciation of the extent, importance and value of California’s rangelands and natural resources. Range Camp fosters an appreciation for several fields of applied science and management through interaction with university faculty and experienced professionals in classroom and field activities.

Students will address the importance of such topics as plant identification, livestock production, wildlife management, forestry, fire ecology, geology, soils, water resources, rangeland ecosystems, technologies used in natural resource science and management.

At the end of the week, students will be evaluated on their understanding of the materials, with the top two campers being awarded an all-expense-paid trip to represent California and the Pacific Islands at SRM’s High School Youth Forum (HSYF) held in conjunction with its national science meeting in Corpus Christie, Texas, from January 30- February 6, 2014. The third highest camper will be invited to attend as well, but will need to find other means of paying for the trip. (Delegates must still be in high school through Feb 2015.)

MEEC is offering four student scholarships that will be awarded to attend Range Camp this summer. Scholarships include tuition and roundtrip airfare up to $350 per person. To apply, students must be enrolled in a school located within the MEEC boundaries of San Bernardino County’s High Desert Region, the Antelope Valley or Riverside County’s Blythe Region and be age 15-18 by the start date of camp. The deadline for application submission to MEEC is April 24, 2015 at 4:00 PM.

MEEC is offering scholarships to students aged 15-18 in its Antelope Valley/High Desert service areas to attend the Range and Natural Resources Youth Camp at Elkus Youth Camp at Half Moon Bay, California from 15-20 June 2014.  The applications are due directly to MEEC by no later than 18 April 2014 (applications submitted directly to the Range Camp are not eligible for consideration).

AV Society of Women Engineers Scholarship Deadline 4/25/14

Applications for two $1,000 scholarships, funded by Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, are now being accepted by the AV chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.  Female high school seniors, community college transfer students, and current undergraduates with permanent residency within the Antelope Valley, California (zip codes beginning 935**) and who are/will be pursuing an engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution are eligible to apply by providing official transcripts and application documents to the AV chapter of SWE at SWE.AntelopeValley@gmail.com by no later than 25 April 2014.  For further information regarding eligibility and application requirements, visit AV SWE Scholarship .

Forest Ecology Teacher Workshops 4/26-4/27/14 - Scholarships Available

Scholarship Applications are now available for the Boeing sponsored "Forest Ecology" teacher workshop scheduled for April 26 and 27, 2014. The application is attached and the deadline for submission is April 9, 2014 @ 5:00 PM.

The Forest Ecology workshop is a study in forest ecology designed to provide educators with the necessary tools and resources to foster student understanding of and appreciation for the forested lands throughout North America. Educators will be working directly with CalFire and National Resources Conservation Service foresters located in the San Bernardino Mountain area of Lake Arrowhead which were ravaged by wildfires.

This two-day teacher workshop will provide twenty (20) educators with valuable tools, including Project Learning Tree's "Exploring Environmental Issues: Focus on Forests" curriculum, which provides an opportunity for hands-on study of forest resources while addressing concepts in biology, civics, ecology, economics, forest management, and other subject areas. Project Learning Tree (PLT) is one of the most widely used environmental education programs in the United States and abroad. PLT continues to set the standard for environmental education excellence. Educators will receive the PLT PreK-8 activity guide and/or the secondary thematic modules (Forest Ecology, Focus on Forests, Solid Waste, Risk, Places We Live) for use with older youth. Through the activities found within this module, educators will have their students examine ecological systems of a forest; analyze interdependencies within a forest ecosystem; and explore factors, such as fire, that shape the development of forests. In addition, students will develop critical thinking skills and discover the importance of scientific analysis when making decisions about forest issues.

Twenty (20) Teacher Scholarships will be awarded to attend a two-day, overnight training session located in the Lake Arrowhead area of the San Bernardino National Forest. Scholarships include all meals, lodging (Best Western, Big Bear Lake), curriculum materials, and a $50 transportation stipend. Scholarships are limited and are on a first come, first served basis. Sorry, no spouses or partners may accompany the workshop attendee due to limited arrangements.

A $50 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT will be required for all scholarship recipients upon acceptance of application to confirm your attendance at this workshop. Your check will be returned to you upon check in on April 26.

Siemens "We Can Change the World Challenge" Now Open for K-12 Teams

The Siemens Foundation and Discovery Education have announced the opening of call for entries to the annual "We Can Change the World Challenge" for K-12 student teams.  Students, paired with a teacher advisor (part- or full-time school employee), work to find a green solution to an environmental issue in their classroom, school or community.  Once registered as a team, there are resources and web-based curriculum tools available for use.  Winning teams and schools are eligible to receive part of a total prize package of $300,000 worth of scholarships, savings bonds, school grants, adventure trips, school assemblies and more.

Annual Range and Natural Resources Camp Scholarship Applications Due by 5/10/13

MEEC - Key Issues Scholarship Applications Due 4/19/13

MEEC, through the generosity of its sponsors, is once again offering scholarships to teachers to attend the Key Issues Institute this summer in Silverthorne, Colorado.  Three Antelope Valley teachers and one from the San Bernardino County high desert/Riverside County Blyth region will be awarded scholarships.  Applications for the one-week environmental issues conference are available for 5th-8th grade core subject teachers who will implement the curriculum into their content during the school year; they must be submitted by no later than 19 April 2013.  For more information, visit MEEC Key Issues Scholarship.

MEEC Environmental/Engineering Scholarship Applications Due by 4/17/13

MEEC Desert Studies Photography Workshop Moved to 3/23-3/24/13

Through the generosity of Boeing, scholarships will be available for 18 teachers to attend the Joshua Tree Desert Studies workshop on 23-24 March 2013. Teachers will need to bring their own camera for the sessions in Joshua Tree National Park and Big Morongo Preserve; they will be housed at the Historic Joshua Tree Retreat Center. Applications for the scholarship, which includes registration, curriculum materials, a $50 transportation stipend, and an autographed copy of David Lamfrom's "Tortoise Through the Lens Book," are due to Christie Robinson at MEEC by no later than 5:00pm on Wednesday, 6 March 2013. Women in Mining Scholarship Applications Due by 4/12/13

The Women in Mining California Chapter is offering five $1,000 scholarships to young women planning on obtaining a degree in mining, geology, engineering, or environmental studies.  Students must be either high school seniors or currently enrolled in college with a GPA of at least 3.0, California residents, and US citizens, but may attend/plan on attending a college outside of the state.  Applications for the scholarships must be received by no later than 12 April 2013.  For more information and to download the application, visit http://wimca.org/scholarship-opportunities/ .

Making the Future Scholarship Application Due 3/31/13

Cognizant is sponsoring a design-based scholarship for undergraduate college students in STEM fields.  Candidates will be required to submit documentation of their hands-on project that features creativity and innovation.  The scholarships are for $5,000 payable to the two- or four-year university for the US student's account; students must have a GPA of 2.5 or above.  Applications are due by 31 March 2013.  For more information about eligibility and application requirements, visit http://www.cognizant.com/makingthefuture .

Thiel Fellowship Applications Due by 12/31/12

The Thiel Fellowship is once again offering a "no-strings attached" grant of $100,000 to young people to "skip college and focus on their work, their research, and their self-education."  They are mentored and work together with other like-minded teens to see how STEM can change the world.  The areas in which projects are sought include biotech, genomics and synthetic biology, robotics, information and communications technology, aerospace, artificial intelligence, neurotech, nanotech, and medical devices.  Applicants must have been born after 31 December 1992, and should be interested in projects that are 2 to 10 years ahead of where current technology is in place.  For more information on the application process and experience as a Thiel Fellow, visit http://www.thielfellowship.org/become-a-fellow/about-the-program/ .
