Range and Natural Resources Camp in June 2016; Scholarships Available

The 32nd Annual Range and Natural Resources Camp will be taking place June 19-24, 2016 at the beautiful Elkus Youth Ranch in Half Moon Bay, California. The camp offers students between the ages of 15-18 the opportunity to work with peers from throughout the state and is designed to offer an appreciation of the extent, importance and value of California’s rangelands and natural resources. Range Camp fosters an appreciation for several fields of applied science and management through interaction with university faculty and experienced professionals in classroom and field activities.

Students will address the importance of such topics as plant identification, livestock production, wildlife management, forestry, fire ecology, geology, soils, water resources, rangeland ecosystems, technologies used in natural resource science and management.

At the end of the week, students will be evaluated on their understanding of the materials, with the top two scoring campers being awarded an all-expense-paid trip to represent California and the Pacific Islands at The Society for Range Management’s High School Youth Forum (HSYF) held in conjunction with its national science meeting in St. George, Utah, from January 29-February 2, 2016. The third highest scoring camper will be invited to attend as well, but will need to find other means of paying for the trip. (Delegates must still be in high school through Feb 2017.)

MEEC is offering four student scholarships that will be awarded to attend Range Camp this summer. Scholarships include tuition ($450) and roundtrip airfare up to $350 per person. To apply, students must be enrolled in a school located within the MEEC boundaries of San Bernardino County’s High Desert Region, the Antelope Valley or Riverside County’s Blythe Region and be age 15-18 by the start date of camp. The deadline for application submission to MEEC is April 21, 2016 at 5:00 PM.

Honeywell Educators Space Camp Scholarship Applications Accepted Until 10/20/14

Honeywell Hometown Solutions and the financial contributions of Honeywell employees have made possible the scholarships for educators attending Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy (HESA). Each scholarship covers the following: tuition for the 5-day program at U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama; round trip airfare; meals and double occupancy accommodations; program materials; flight suit.

HESA will have 2 program weeks: June 10-16, 2015 and June 17-23, 2015.

To be considered to receive a scholarship for the 2015 HESA program, educators must meet the following requirements:

• Current and practicing educator that is teaching science or math to students ages 10-14 years old and will continue to teach these subjects areas through 2016
• Certified teacher in a public or private school system
• Is not a spouse/family member of a U.S. Space & Rocket Center employee
• Has not previously attended HESA and/or a Space Camp educator program

Liberty Power and USHCC Hispanic Student Scholarship Application Due 7/15/14

2014 Siemens Competitions in Math, Science & Technology Now Open for Registration

The Siemens Foundation, in partnership with Discovery Education, has opened registration for the 2014 Math, Science and Technology Competition for high school students. All submissions of original research projects are due by no later than 30 September 2014, and students may enter either individually or as a member of a team.  Regional winners selected will have their projects reviewed at universities around the nation, including Cal Tech in Pasadena, in November.  National finalists will present their projects in Washington, D.C.  in December.  Winners will receive scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000.  For further information and to register, go to 2014 Siemens Competitions .

The Lexus and Scholastic “Eco Challenge” offers $500,000 in grants and scholarships!

The Lexus Eco Challenge, designed by Lexus and Scholastic, is a nationwide education program and contest about the environment that empowers teens to create a better world. Middle and high school students, grades 6-12, across the country can participate in one or both of the two initial challenges addressing environmental issues related to land, water, air and climate. To participate in this STEM competition teams, comprised of 5-10 students and a teacher advisor, must: define an issue, make a plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report on the results. Up to 16 teams in each challenge will win $10,000 in grants and scholarships. All the winning teams will be invited to participate in the Final Challenge for a chance to win one of two $30,000 grand prizes. In all, $500,000 in scholarships and grants will be awarded. 

 Registration for the first challenge (land/water) begins September 2, 2013 (deadline Oct. 7)

Registration for the second challenge (air/climate) begins October 14, 2013 (deadline Nov. 11)

 

Registration for the final challenge begins November 18, 2013 (deadline January 17).

Marine Ecology Workshop for Teachers 6/23-6/25/13

MEEC, sponsored by the Boeing Corp.,  is offering sixteen scholarships for High Desert California (AV and Mojave/Riverside) teachers to attend a three-day, two-night marine ecology workshop on Catalina Island hosted by The Catalina Experience at White's Landing on 23-25 June 2013.  The rustic experience will include both classroom and field work using the scientific method focusing on marine biodiversity and environmental marine biology.  Scholarships include transportation to/from Catalina Island, all meals, lodging, curriculum materials, and a $50.00 transportation stipend. Busy STEM Weekend in the AV!

Saturday, 11 May 2013, saw several STEM-related events going simultaneously within the Antelope Valley.  Among them were the Tech Trek Awards held at the Palmdale School District Boardroom, where 35 seventh-grade young ladies received certificates acknowledging their scholarships to attend a one-week summer Tech Trek camp at either Whittier College, UC Irvine, or UC Santa Barbara sponsored by AAUW.  The keynote speaker for the morning was Taylor Lenton, QHHS grad and chemistry Ph.D. student at Cal Tech.

 Also on Saturday, the AV Wind Turbine Challenge saw 10 teams from SOAR and 5 from Palmdale High Schools competing in this first annual event held at AV College.  The third place team (based on energy output tested in a wind tunnel, as well as innovation and other characteristics judged by Kriss Vanderhyde and Joel Beckmann) was the Hurricaneers, the second place team was named . . . First Place, and the first place team hailed from the FAST Academy at Palmdale High School;  winners received cash awards courtesy of TerraGen.

Finally, the Agriculture and Environmental Science Academy at Littlerock High School hosted its annual "Ag and Environmental Science Expo" which featured events including soil testing, transplanting, recycling, and a petting zoo, among others.

MEEC Desert Studies Workshop and Scholarship Application Due by 10/11/12

Green Convergence "Going Green" Art Contest and Scholarship Deadline 9/14/12

Siemens Math, Science & Technology Competition Entries Due 10/1/12

Team and individual registration for the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology opened 1 May 2012, and the deadline for entries is 1 October 2012.  High school students' entries are initially "blind read" by  panels of judges with experience in the field of the entry; up to 300 projects are chosen as semi-finalists, and up to 30 teams and 30 individual students are selected to go on to regional competitions, including one at Cal Tech in Pasadena (9-10 November 2012).  Regional competitors must do a presentation regarding their project and respond to judging panels' questions; each receives a bronze medal and a $1,000 scholarship.  Regional winners receive a $3,000 scholarship along with a silver medal and advance to the national finals in Washington, D.C.  For more information on the competition, eligibility requirements, and registration, visit Siemens Math Science & Technology Competition 2012 .

Dept. of Homeland Security Visits Cal Poly Cybercamp

Mark Weatherford, Deputy Undersecretary for Cybersecurity from the US Department of Homeland Security, visited Cal Poly Pomona as part of a panel discussion at the campus's third annual summer CyberSecurity Camp held last week.  Mr. Weatherford noted the difficulties in getting qualified workers, adding that Secretary Janet Napolitano will be convening a taskforce to deal with the issue.  The Cal Poly camp, organized by Dr. Dan Manson, had 40 participants, ranging in age from 18 to 60; approximately $40,000 in scholarships were awarded from similar camps held last year, which are designed to spark interest and innovation in the cybersecurity field.  http://diamondbar.patch.com/articles/homeland-security-deputy-director-visits-cal-poly?goback=%2Egde_108447_member_137944498

Bakersfield College Receives NSF Grant for STEM Scholarships

APWA Scholarship Applications Due by 3/15/12

MEEC Announces "Key Issues" Scholarship Applications Due By 4/2/12

The Mojave Environmental Education Consortium (MEEC) has announced the availability of three full scholarships (including registration, airfare, and lodging) for core academic teachers of grades 5 through 8 to attend one of three sessions of the "Key Issues: Bringing Environmental Issues to the Classroom" symposium at the Keystone Education Center in Colorado in June or July 2012.  The scholarships are sponsored by the generosity of organizations such as the Antelope Valley Air Quality Management District, Lockheed Martin - Palmdale, Boeing, Los Angeles County Sanitation District, and MEEC.  Applications must be received by MEEC by no later than 2 April 2012, and may be e-mailed to Violette Roberts at vroberts@mdaqmd.ca.gov , faxed to (760) 241-6271, or mailed to MEEC at 14306 Park Avenue, Victorville, CA  92392.

High Desert Chapter of ASMC Scholarship Applications Due by 3/16/12

Marine Ecology Teacher Workshop Scholarship Application Due by 4/15/12
