Registration Now Open for 4th Annual STEM Conference for Girls on 3/5/16

The Antelope Valley Union High School District and Antelope Valley College are co-hosting the 4th annual STEM Conference for Girls on Saturday, 5 March 2016, from 9:00am-3:00pm, at the AVUHSD Palmdale Conference Center.  The FREE event is open to 100 young ladies in grades 6-12, who will participate in hands-on workshops, and hear from industry and young professionals.  Pre-registration is required; a box lunch is provided.  There is also a strand available for a limited number of parents.

CSLN STEM Summit Scheduled for 3/16-17/2015 in Los Angeles

The California STEM Learning Network will be hosting its fifth annual STEM Summit at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles on 16-17 March 2015, with a theme of "Unleashing Curiosity Through STEM."  Featured speakers are scheduled to include California Assembly Member Susan Bonilla, Dr. Dennis Bartels of the Exploratorium, and Chris Roe, CEO of CSLN.  A variety of breakout sessions are planned.  Spaces are limited, and early registration is encouraged.  Visit CSLN STEM Summit for additional detail and to register.

Project Lead the Way Conference Early Bird Registration Open Until 12/13/13

The third annual Project Lead the Way statewide conference will be held on 20-21 February 2014 at the Sacramento Sheraton Grand Hotel.  Early bird registration is available for $150 until Friday, 13 December 2013 (increase to $175 on 14 December).  The fee includes snack and cocktail reception Thursday, and breakfast and lunch Friday along with the conference sessions.  Hotel rooms are available for $150 per night at the Sheraton, after registering for the conference.  For further information and to register, visit PLTW Statewide Conference Registration .

California STEM Symposium a Premier Event

Approximately 2,500 people gathered in Sacramento on 18-19 November 2013 for the first California STEM Symposium.  Keynote speakers included such notables as Sugata Mitra, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Geena Davis, Kenneth Wesson, and retired astronaut Jose Hernandez.  State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla also addressed the crowd, as did students Laura Gouillon and Thomas Suarez.  Deputy Superintendent Lupita Cortez Alcala served as mistress of ceremonies for the conference.  Nearly 150 breakout sessions were offered on a variety of STEM topics, including a presentation on early childhood STEM Success by Stephanie Lester of Lancaster School District, and roundtable presentations on K-8 STEM outreach by Andy Glatfelter of Discovery School in Lancaster, and by Joel Beckmann (National Defendse Eduction Program) and Diane Walker (AVUHSD) on Creating and Expanding Vibrant STEM Pathways.  SacBee NBA Great Promotes STEM Education

California Women in STEM Profiles plus STEM Innovation Conference

In a recent press release, it was announced that the California Dept. of Education, the California State Library, the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, and the California Research Bureau are partnering to encourage more students, particularly underrrepresented groups such as students of color and young women, to enter the STEM fields.  As part of this initiative, the California State Library is hosting an on-line exhibit for "California Women in STEM", which profiles a different woman each week leading up to the "Invest in California STEM Education: Innovate, Integrate, and Inspire!" Conference planned for 18-19 November 2013 in Sacramento.  The conference, with best practices presentations and keynotes, is scheduled to feature Geena Davis, Sugata Mitra, and Jose Hernandez, among others.  Women in Science and Tech Industries Profiled News Release. 

STEM Conference for Girls Scheduled for 3/9/13

The AVUHSD, AVC, and Upper Hand to College are co-sponsoring a "STEM Conference for Girls" on Saturday, 9 March 2013, from 8:30am to 3:00pm at the Center for CTE, 1156 East Avenue "S," Palmdale.  The day will feature a panel discussion of STEM industry professional women, as well as hands-on workshops designed for middle school and high school young ladies.  Space is limited to 60 middle school girls and 60 high school girls, first-come, first-served.  There will also be sessions for their parents who attend.  For additional information and to register, visit STEM Conference for Girls Registration Information .

"Engineering Education in a Global Context" Theme of ASEE Pacific Southwest Section April Conference

The American Society for Engineering Education Pacific Southwest Section Conference will be held at the Bourns College of Engineering at UC Riverside on 18-20 April 2013; the theme will be "Engineering Education in a Global Context."  The conference is designed to "present and share innovative tools and best practices in addressing the challenges of Engineering Education in a changing world, with particular emphasis in expanding pathways to meet future needs and demands globally. ScienceOnline TEEN Presents "Unconference" on 4/13/13

"Scaling STEM: Strategies That Engage Minds" Conference Scheduled for March 2013

North Carolina New Schools Project and Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM (TIES) are co-sponsoring the "Scaling STEM: Strategies that Engage Minds" conference for 11-12 March 2013 in Durham, North Carolina.  The session is designed for school leaders "to learn together and provide best and emerging practices from STEM school operations," with sessions including designing on-line programs, career pathways, STEM schools and networks, as well as collaborating with workforce developers and philanthropists.  The keynote speaker will be Emily Stover DeRocco, President of The Manufacturing Institute.  For more information on the conference, visit http://scalingstem.org/.

AFRL Hosting Rocket Propulsion Research Conference at AVC

National Math Summer Institute in Colorado 30 July- 1 August 2012

STEM Solutions 2012 Summit Concludes

The STEM Solutions 2012 summit was held 25-27 June in Dallas, TX, sponsored by US News and World Report. American Society for Engineering Education Conference Scheduled for 6/10-6/13/12

CDE Calls for Math Teachers to Participate in 2013 Framework Revision; Applications Due 1/5/12

The California Department of Education has requested that math teachers participate in focus groups related to the 2013 math framework revision arising out of the Common Core State Standards.  Current educators may apply for "four focus groups across California. Each focus group will include between 10 and 15 invitees, who will be selected to ensure balanced representation of regions, types of schools, and grade-level experience." 

Focus group meetings are currently planned for afternoons at the following dates and locations:

NAPE Professional Development on "Access, Equity, and Diversity" 4/16-4/19/12
