Student Spaceflight Experiments - Deadline to Inquire 6/30/13

Once again, NASA and the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education are making available the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program on the International Space Station.  Individual schools (not classes) and districts for grades 5-12 may participate in the program utilizing microgravity experiments designed by students.  Inquiries about participation must be made by no later than 30 June 2013, and proposals, including community participation and funding being secured, must be completed by no later than 4 September 2013; the design process is scheduled to run from 9 September to November 2013.  Selection of projects to be included will take place in December 2013, and the ferry flight will be in Spring of 2014, with an expected return six weeks later.  There will be a national conference at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC in July of 2014.

NASA EarthKAM Information Sessions Available 1/22 and 1/29/13

NASA is inviting middle school teachers to participate in the International Space Station EarthKAM Winter 2013 missions from 29 January through 1 February 2013.  This will allow students to program the ISS cameras to view specific Earth locations.  For more information about the program, visit http://www.earthkam.ucsd.edu.  In order to participate, new teachers are encouraged to take part in a free on-line information session regarding the process and classroom requirements; two sessions will be held - one on 22 January at 7:30am PST, and the other on 29 January at 4:30pm PST.  E-mail your intention to participate in a specific session (list which) to webinar@earthkam.ucsd.edu. 

NASA Broadcasts Set For 9/13/12

NASA, along with Space Adventures and YouTube, will be broadcasting Astronaut Sunita Williams aboard the International Space Station conducting live experiments submitted by students from around the globe; Bill Nye, the Science Guy, will conduct an interview in Google + Hangout as part of the 40-minute program.  To view the feed, please connect to http://www.youtube.com/spacelab beginning at 7:30am PDT on Thursday, 13 September 2012.

Upcoming NASA AERO Institute Gallery Events

On the next several Thursday evenings, NASA/AERO Institute's Palmdale gallery (located at 38256 Sierra Highway) will be open for public events from 5:30 to 8:30pm.  Here is the schedule of topics:

• 2 August 2012, Mars Science Laboratory, with a presentation by  Dr. Kelly Fast and local robotics team demonstrations;
• 9 August 2012, Human Explorations and Operations Mission, with a "working in space" activity;
• 16 August 2012, arrival of the Space Shuttle Endeavour to the California Science Center, and the International Space Station;
• 23 August 2012, DOME.

NASA Seeking Hosts for Interactive ISS Education Events

NASA has announced that it is seeking hosts for 20-30 minute interactive student discussions with International Space Station astronauts Sunita Williams, Kevin Ford, and Thomas Marshburn sometime between September 2012 and March 2013 (date and time flexibility is required).  Discussions will be broadcast live on NASA TV and streamed on the NASA website; there is no cost to participate.  Proposals must be received before 1 June 2012.
