"Concrete is Not Cement" Workshop in Mojave 4/3/14

CalPortland Company Presents… “Cement is Not Concrete!” A K-12 Teacher Workshop presented by Women In Mining.

Learn the difference between cement and concrete at this teacher workshop presented by Women In Mining, and receive a FREE curricula guide with tables listing specific minerals and rocks, their characteristics, plus lesson plans, glossaries, and a historical timeline of cement notes! Plus, participants will tour the CalPortland Plant to see how cement is made from raw materials, and blasted from the mountain side into important building materials. As an added bonus, participants will also tour the large renewable energy wind turbine site that provides more than 25% of the plant’s energy, and receive FREE energy curriculum!!

Free "Toothpaste With A Twist" Workshop and Tour on 2/19/14

Women in Mining invites High Desert Educators to a special workshop that will provide teachers with all the tools necessary to teach your students about products that use locally-mined natural minerals directly or products that are made from minerals, such as toothpaste! Teachers will learn how to make a “marketable” toothpaste and investigate minerals such as calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, common ingredients in commercial toothpastes. Participants will receive a kit to take back to the classroom to share this fun and investigative activity with their students.

This workshop includes a 30 minute walking tour of the CEMEX River Plant Facility. Closed toed shoes are required.

25th Satellite Educators' Conference Set For 9-11 August 2012

Co-sponsored by NOAA, NWS, US Navy, among others, and supported by Lockheed, Northrop, NASA and others, the 25th anniversary Satellite Educators' Conference, "Earth Speaks - We Listen," will be held on 9-11 August 2012 at Cal State LA, with additional trips and training available in Long Beach, with JPL, etc.  Keynote speakers are scheduled to include Dr. Gregory Robinson, Laura Furgione, Robert Winokur, and Dr. Michael Hanes, with breakout sessions to cover severe weather, ozone layer, climate change, and will partner K-16 educators with industry experts.  For more information and to register for the conference, visit http://www.sated.org/index04.htm .

NASA Student Flight Mission Challenge NOI Letters Due by 4/16/12

NASA DFRC and JPL are providing an opportunity to educators of grades 7-9 to submit a proposal for student teams regarding improved earthquake monitoring through airborne science research platforms.  "Through this challenge, students will have the opportunity to investigate, evaluate, design and present a solution to a real-world problem that will expand our understanding of earthquakes at the global level. Students will form small mission teams to create multimedia presentations that suggest a site for a new earthquake science investigation."  Proposals will be reviewed by NASA teams, and winners will be invited to participate in the AREES 2012 Summer Academy.

Notice of Intent letters are due by 16 April 2012 and student team proposals are due by no later than 21 May 2012.

Cal Portland Cement is hosting a return of the popular "Cement is Not Concrete" teacher workshop on 22 March 2012 in Mojave.  This free session (which includes dinner, a tour of the site's wind turbines, and standards-based curriculum resources) will provide information about specific minerals and rocks and their characteristics.  Space is limited to the first 20 teachers (only!) who register with Christie Robinson at christier@mdaqmd.ca.gov or by phone at 760.245.1661 x 6101.
